Take Root
Take Root’s mission is to facilitate outdoor experiences that inspire the curious mind, instill love and appreciation for nature, and nurture positive and holistic living. Encompassed in the mission is the understanding that being in and with nature encourages respect and admiration for the environment and all living things — cultivating the growth of healthy and diverse communities.
Using a whole-child learning approach, Take Root’s team tends to the roots of growth. Each class supports the needs of the children — leading them through a learning process that nurtures their souls, feeds their minds and strengthens their bond with the community. Take Root nourishes the roots — tilling the soil in preparation for healthy growth of body and mind — allowing space for each child to find their sense of place.

Bonnet House
Chicago-born artist Frederic Clay Bartlett created Bonnet House in 1920 on South Florida oceanfront land given to him and his second wife, Helen Louise Birch, by her father, Hugh Taylor Birch, a prominent Chicago attorney, real estate investor, and naturalist. Tragedy struck in 1925 when Helen died from breast cancer and in 1931 Frederic married Evelyn Fortune Lilly. She spent winters at Bonnet House until 1995. Today, the estate is a preeminent house museum dedicated not only to historic and environmental preservation, but also to learning and creative expression – much like the Bartletts and Birches themselves.

The VELA Founder Network is growing every day, with founders in all 50 states and three U.S. territories collectively building a vibrant educational ecosystem. The majority of founders in the VELA Founder Network operate learning environments, but the network also includes ecosystem builders who provide direct services and support for the alternative education ecosystem. Collectively, VELA founders are empowering families to take charge of their children’s educational journey.
